Chapter 28

Ryker

I watch Bree eat with a gusto that makes me smile.

I try to hide it behind my hand, but she sees it and asks, “What?”

“Nothing,” I say, shaking my head. “Just enjoying you.”

“Oh,” she says, her cheeks going pink. “Don’t stare at me.”

“I enjoy staring at you. You are so beautiful,” I murmur, reaching out to twist my hand into her hair.

She gasps, tilting her head back, looking for a kiss. I don’t disappoint her. Leaning over, I press my lips to hers, making sure to keep my body a safe distance away. It took everything I had to pull away from her earlier. I didn’t think I would be able to. But the last thing I want to do is hurt her in any way.

After tasting her sweetness for a moment, I grip her chin and pull back. “Are you still hungry?”

She shakes her head.

“Shall we go to the couch?” I ask.

She nods, rendered speechless, it seems.

I help her up and lead her over. We sit and she clears her throat.

“Can I ask if you’ve found anything out about the intruder?” she asks carefully.

“Hunter is on it. He has doubled security around the compound. Are you worried?” I ask.

She shrugs. “Not really, I guess.”

I can see she is putting on a braver face than how she really feels. I reach out to cup the back of her neck. The need to keep touching her is overwhelming. “Move closer to me,” I murmur.

She shakes her head. “I like where I am, Ryker,” she says. “I don’t want to be a burden.”

“You are definitely not that,” I tell her.

She smiles shyly.

I bite the inside of my lip. I’m not used to this. Conversation has never really been my strong suit, preferring to get right down to business with a woman.

“What is it?” she asks, interrupting my thoughts.

“Hmm? Oh, nothing,” I reply, not wanting to scare her off.

“No, it’s something,” she presses. “Tell me. You can tell me anything.”

I smile. “You are too sweet, Bree.”

She scrunches up her face, “Ugh. Sweet.”

I chuckle. “But you are. I’m not used to it, that’s all. But that’s on me, not you.”

“What do you mean?” she asks warily.

“Nothing,” I mutter.

“No,” she says sharply. “What did you mean?”

“Bree, it’s nothing,” I insist, wanting to get away from this conversation.

“Look,” she says with a huff and stands up. “Just because I’ve never had a relationship before or kissed a man before you earlier, doesn’t mean you get to treat me any differently.”

As her words sink in, I leap off the couch as well and move away from her. “You’ve never kissed anyone before me?” I croak out.

Jesus. I start to sweat. She is far more innocent than even I could have imagined. What am I doing here? This makes no sense.

“No,” she says defiantly. “What of it?” She folds her arms over her chest.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I implore her, sitting heavily on the bed and then wishing I had gone nowhere near it.

“Why should I? Are you going to tell me how many women you’ve kissed before me?” she challenges me.
